Hot Meals & Homework is an innovative partnership between ForKids and the community that provides tutoring & mentoring. for children in Aftercare and a hot, nutritious meal for the entire family of each participating child.
Volunteers from the
Downtown 100
Virginia Natural Gas
Norfolk Southern Corporation
and
Student Ambassadors from Norfolk State University
provide the tutoring and
local restaurants donate the family meals.
It's a great community partnership that makes a
lasting difference!
In FY 2007, 83%
of children in the program
improved their grades, which
we consider to be a resounding success.
The comments below, from the teacher of a Hot Meals & Homework participant, best reflect what ForKids considers a success:
“My student not only raised her grade point average but
was awarded
‘Most Improved Behavior Award’.
I rarely see this kind of success
unless there is a
dedicated group of partners working together
to address the complex needs of a Special Education student.
ForKids took great care to match my student with a
DT100 tutor who was best suited to her needs and with
whom she developed a great rapport. I was always able
to call ForKids and discuss the student’s progress
and any concerns regarding grades, behavior, etc.
When all programs work together, as we did with
Hot Meals & Homework, students have a much
better chance for academic success.”
